The Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island and the Board of Rabbis of Rhode Island were shocked and saddened to learn about the shooting of a man outside of the Islamic Center of Rhode Island in Providence last week. This shooting has created a sense of fear among many living in the Islamic community and beyond.

Our state was founded on religious freedom, and while a motive has not yet been made clear, this act of violence outside of a house of worship is unconscionable.

The Jewish community rejects Islamophobia, anti-Arab hate, antisemitism, and all forms of bigotry. We stand in solidarity with all our neighbors under threat, and urge our elected and civic leaders, law enforcement, schools and universities, and employers to make clear there will be zero tolerance for any act of hate.

Together, we pray for the speedy recovery of the victim, and we wish for a return to peace for all those involved.
