Cut/Paste: Collage in Context
Before collage was “high art”, the art of gluing papers and other materials was practiced by self-taught makers. In this combined art history / studio course, short weekly presentations explore art throughout history that have utilized collage. Demonstrations on cutting, gluing, and working with paint inform students’ work and teach how to construct a collage from scratch. Discussions and working with mixed media empower students to define and strengthen their individual voices. The course culminates in final projects where students work with themes of their choice, honing techniques, and integrating skills they’ve learned. This course is open to students at all experience levels.
