When school is out, J-Space is the place to be!

J-Space Afterschool is a licensed enrichment program of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island offered at the Dwares JCC for children in grades K-5. Our goal is to provide children with a safe and nurturing environment focused on academics, social skills, sports, arts, and fun! This year, we have an exciting line-up with different offerings each day to provide kids with a full schedule of opportunities.

Transition Care 
Ages: 5 – 11  
Transition Care is a flexible after-school option to complement our enrichment classes offered at the Dwares JCC.  Student must either be signed up for a class offered below or swim team. We will meet your child at the bus stop or in the lobby.  From there they will enjoy a healthy snack and quiet activities before being escorted to their class.  We will then pick up your child from the class for continued activities until a parent is able to arrive.  Transition Care is not available on days when classes do not meet.

Music Explorers
Grades K-3

Taught and developed in collaboration with Kristen Sprague, 40+ year veteran music educator from the Wheeler School, this rockin' new program from Exploration Studios introduces children to music, stories, and cultures from around the world. Based in the Orff Approach to music education, Music Explorers combines music, movement, and storytelling to inspire creativity and self-expression in each child. This Winter we focus on the great continent of Africa, exploring instruments, rhythms, dances, songs, and folktales while working together to develop a sense of confidence and wonder. For the final class of the session, we invite each Music Explorer’s special adult(s) to join the fun for a truly immersive performance experience! 

As Carl Orff said, “[Children] would much rather play, and if you have their interests at heart, you will let them learn while they play.” Music Explorers offers a holistic and engaging experience, which fosters creativity, musicality, and social development through multi-sensory, play-based learning.

Science Explorers: Wonderful World of Slime
Grades K-3 

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Slime! Did you know slime is formed through chemical reactions? Plus it’s just good ole fashion fun! Join your friends at Exploration Studios to explore all the variations of slime you could possibly imagine. Each week, Science Explorers will concoct a different type of slime and watch as the kid-safe ingredients foam, fizzle, and squish, changing from liquid to solid. From butter and crunchy to glitter and exploding, slime-making is a joyful experience which supports brain development, promotes scientific exploration, encourages problem solving, and activates all of your child’s senses!

S.T.E.M. Explorers
Grades K-3

Spark kids’ imaginations in this Stop Motion Animation Adventure from Exploration Studios Young creators will dive into the magical world of storytelling as they build characters and sets using Play-Doh, LEGOs, found objects, and anything else they can dream up. Each week, kids will explore how technology brings their ideas to life—learning to use stop-motion apps, cameras, and simple editing tools to turn tiny movements into movie magic.

Through hands-on guidance, students will design their own storyboards, experiment with animation techniques, and work together to create short films bursting with creativity. From brainstorming wild ideas to celebrating their final mini-movies, this program transforms imagination into motion—one frame at a time!

Art Explorers
Grades K-3

Art Explorers is back and better than ever! The beloved program from Exploration Studios brings art to life by introducing children to artists, art movements, and mediums in an accessible and exciting way. Each week our Art Explorers learn about a new artist and utilize various materials to generate their own special work of art. From Michelangelo’s High Renaissance and Picasso’s Cubism to Banksy’s street art and Joan Mitchell’s Abstract Expressionism, Art Explorers engage with their world in a meaningful way. At the end of the session, each child goes home with a portfolio of pieces they feel proud to share with their family and friends.

As Picasso said, “Every child is an artist!” Art Explorers will develop not only a love of art but also increased confidence, problem solving abilities, critical thinking, communication, collaborative skills, cultural awareness, AND SO MUCH MORE!

Schmooze and Swim

End your week socializing with your friends.  Children will have a healthy snack, enjoy quiet activities and splash in the pool.  We will swim from 3:15 to 4:00pm.
