When school is out, J-Space is the place to be!

J-Space Afterschool is a licensed enrichment program of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island offered at the Dwares JCC for children in grades K-5. Our goal is to provide children with a safe and nurturing environment focused on academics, social skills, sports, arts, and fun! This year, we have an exciting line-up with different offerings each day to provide kids with a full schedule of opportunities. 

Transition Care 
Ages: 5 – 11  
Transition Care is a flexible after-school option to complement our enrichment classes offered at the Dwares JCC.  Any children not attending JCDSRI must be able to be dropped off at the JCC and we will meet your child in the lobby.  From there they will enjoy a healthy snack and quiet activities before being escorted to their class.  We will then pick up your child from the class for continued activities until a parent is able to arrive.  

Children must be signed up for an enrichment class in order to register for transition care. In addition, children enrolled in Swim Team or taking music lessons with Chelsea are also eligible for transition care.

Transition Care is not available on days when classes do not meet.

Science Explorers: Kitchen Experiments
Ages 5 - 11 (Kindergarten through 5th grade)

Did you know that many foods are formed through chemical reactions? Each week, Science Explorers will take a bite out of a new recipe, investigating how ingredients interact to create the foods we eat every day. From oil and water to baking soda and vinegar, each component has its own personality — and impacts a recipe in its own delicious way. Science Explorers will journey around the globe through the universal language of food, exploring international recipes and the fascinating science behind them. From Japanese mochi and Mexican pan dulce to Indian lassi and French crêpes, each week brings a new country, a new culture, and a whole new set of ingredients to investigate. Science Explorers will develop their five senses and have a ton of fun measuring, mixing, shaping, and sampling their kitchen experiments!

Fit Kids with Coach Kim
Ages 5 - 9 (Kindergarten through 3rd grade)

Keep the momentum going after the school bell rings! Join Coach Kim weekly for a fun, dynamic workout packed with fun movement games, strength-building calisthenics, and speed & agility drills. Each week will provide variety and fun, while focusing on skills that translate to everyday life, and youth sports, such as building confidence, coordination, and healthy habits.

Young Playwrights Club
Ages 5 - 9 (Kindergarten through 3rd grade)

Students work together to make a short play that will be performed on the last class of the session. There will be puppet crafting, costume-making, clown/improv/ devising games that will culminate in a beautiful, brave performance to put on for grown-ups. 

Kelly is a Providence-based actor and clown with over a decade of teaching experience. S.T.E.M. Explorers: Video Games
Ages 5 - 11 (Kindergarten through 5th grade)

Did you know that the video games you love are made by real people — artists, engineers, storytellers, and problem-solvers — who started exactly where you are right now? Welcome to S.T.E.M. Explorers: Video Game Design, where imagination has no limits! In this one-of-a-kind program from Exploration Studios, young game designers will go behind the screen to discover how their favorite games are made — from concept and character design to levels, challenges, and rules. Using kid-friendly tools, Explorers will brainstorm, sketch, prototype, and playtest their very own original video games, bringing their wildest ideas to life one pixel at a time.

All materials and technology included. No prior coding experience required — just curiosity and a love of games!

Art Explorers: 3D Sculptures
Ages 5 - 11 (Kindergarten through 5th grade)

Art isn't always flat. Sometimes it stands up, reaches out, and asks to be touched. This season, Art Explorers is going three-dimensional! Each week, our Art Explorers will be inspired by a master sculptor and use a variety of materials and techniques to build, carve, stack, and shape their own original works. From Alexander Calder's playful mobiles and Louise Nevelson's bold assemblages to Alberto Giacometti's haunting figures and the ancient art of origami, Explorers will discover that sculpture can be made from almost anything — wire, wood, paper, found objects, and so much more. Through hands-on making, we'll explore balance, form, texture, and space — the building blocks of three-dimensional art. We'll experiment with armatures and structures. We'll figure out what holds things together and what makes something stand on its own.

All materials included. Each Explorer goes home with a collection of sculptural works they feel proud to share with their family and friends.

Schmooze and Swim

Little Art Explorers
Ages 2-4

Become an Art Explorer! The inaugural program from Exploration Studios brings art to life by introducing our littlest artists and their adults to artists and materials in an accessible and exciting way. Each week our Little Art Explorers read a special book about art and explore various materials to generate their own special work of art. At the end of the session, each child goes home with a portfolio of pieces they feel proud to share with their family and friends.

As Picasso said, “Every child is an artist!” Art Explorers will develop not only a love of art but also increased confidence, problem solving abilities, critical thinking, communication, collaborative skills, cultural awareness, AND SO MUCH MORE! All materials included.
