When school is out, J-Space is the place to be!

J-Space Afterschool is a licensed enrichment program of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island offered at the Dwares JCC for children in grades K-5. Our goal is to provide children with a safe and nurturing environment focused on academics, social skills, sports, arts, and fun! This year, we have an exciting line-up with different offerings each day to provide kids with a full schedule of opportunities.

Transition Care 
Ages: 5 – 11  
Transition Care is a flexible after-school option to complement our enrichment classes offered at the Dwares JCC.  Student must either be signed up for a class offered below or swim team. We will meet your child at the bus stop or in the lobby.  From there they will enjoy a healthy snack and quiet activities before being escorted to their class.  We will then pick up your child from the class for continued activities until a parent is able to arrive.  Transition Care is not available on days when classes do not meet.

S.T.E.M. Explorers
Grades K-3

Become a S.T.E.M. Explorer and flex your creativity and problem-solving skills! This engaging and exciting program from Exploration Studios explores the intersection of engineering and art with the G.O.A.T…Rube Goldberg, an engineer, artist, cartoonist, and all-around inspiring human who designed the most roundabout ways to complete a simple task. Our S.T.E.M. Explorers will learn about chain reactions and cause and effect, utilizing various materials to solve a simple problem. Using recyclables, dominoes, strings, marbles, blocks, levers, and everything in between, we will team up to create our very own Rube Goldberg Machine! Each week Explorers will design and build bite-sized Machines, from simple to more complex. There will be problem solving. There will be creativity. There will be happy accidents. And, most of all, there will be fun and laughs!

Music Explorers
Grades K-3

Welcome to Music Explorers! This rockin' new program from Exploration Studios introduces children to music, stories, and cultures from around the world. Based in the Orff Approach to music education, Music Explorers combines music, movement, and storytelling to inspire creativity and self-expression in each child. This Fall we focus on the great continent of Africa, exploring instruments, rhythms, dances, songs, and folktales while working together to develop a sense of confidence and wonder. For the final class of the session, we invite each Music Explorer’s special adult(s) to join the fun for a truly immersive performance experience! 

As Carl Orff said, “[Children] would much rather play, and if you have their interests at heart, you will let them learn while they play.” Music Explorers offers a holistic and engaging experience, which fosters creativity, musicality, and social development through multi-sensory, play-based learning.

Science Explorers: Kitchen Experiments 
Grades K-3 

Did you know that many foods are formed through chemical reactions? This Fall, cook up some delicious experiments in the Exploration Studios kitchen! Each week Science Explorers will take a bite out of a new recipe, investigating how ingredients interact to create foods we eat everyday. From oil and water to baking soda and vinegar, each component has its own personality and impacts a recipe differently. From apple oxidation and edible geodes to baked ice cream and edible slime, Science Explorers will develop their five senses and have a ton of fun measuring, mixing, shaping, and sampling their kitchen experiments!

The Dwares JCC kitchen is kosher. The Dwares JCC kitchen equipment processes nuts, dairy, eggs, and other known allergens.

Art Explorers
Grades K-3

Art Explorers is back and better than ever! The beloved program from Exploration Studios brings art to life by introducing children to artists, art movements, and mediums in an accessible and exciting way. Each week our Art Explorers learn about a new artist and utilize various materials to generate their own special work of art. From Michelangelo’s High Renaissance and Picasso’s Cubism to Banksy’s street art and Joan Mitchell’s Abstract Expressionism, Art Explorers engage with their world in a meaningful way. At the end of the session, each child goes home with a portfolio of pieces they feel proud to share with their family and friends.

As Picasso said, “Every child is an artist!” Art Explorers will develop not only a love of art but also increased confidence, problem solving abilities, critical thinking, communication, collaborative skills, cultural awareness, AND SO MUCH MORE!

Schmooze and Swim

End your week socializing with your friends.  Children will have a healthy snack, enjoy quiet activities and splash in the pool.  We will swim from 3:30 to 4:15pm.
