PJ Library provides free, age-appropriate, high-quality Jewish books for families raising Jewish children from birth through eight years old. Each month all participating children receive a book in the mail that represents a wide array of Jewish themes accompanied by information for families on how to use the selections in their homes.

Created and supported by our partner, the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, PJ Library is an award-winning Jewish literacy program that helps Jewish families foster curiosity about their heritage while exploring their Jewish identity.

As part of our mission to celebrate and enhance Jewish life we actively reach out to welcome new families raising Jewish children and work hard to help build relationships with and among families with young children. Our programs are inclusive of all, regardless of Jewish affiliation, and aim to empower parents to be active participants in building their family’s Jewish identity. We also help connect families with other Jewish organizations and experiences to promote ongoing learning and community building.

Through the years we have welcomed numerous PJ Library authors and musicians to Rhode Island, conducted storytimes and activities in public spaces such as the Providence Children’s Museum and Books on the Square, and organized a Touch-a-Truck Carnival and Hamantaschen Bake at Tamarisk Assisted Living Facility.

For families with older children, PJ Our Way is for kids ages 9-12. This program is kid-driven, allows participants to choose their own books, and is tailored to each child’s interests and reading level.

As of March 2022, there are 750 children receiving books in 41 cities and towns throughout Rhode Island, and 17 cities and towns in southeastern Massachusetts. The Jewish Alliance welcomed PJ Library to Rhode Island back in September 2007 – and to date, we have served nearly 2,500 children in more than 1,700 families. Since its inception, PJ Library has expanded to include 29 countries across 6 continents, and PJ books are published in 7 languages – an incredible 675,000 books are mailed each month worldwide!

While this valuable program comes at no cost to families, it does come with an expense for the community, which is funded by the Jewish Alliance’s Annual Community Campaign, the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, and other generous donors.

PJ Library is a program of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island, in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
