Vandalism at Congregation Ohawe Sholam

Late Saturday evening or Sunday morning, a swastika was painted on the Kollel sign on the grounds of Congregation Ohawe Sholam in Pawtucket located on East Avenue. The Pawtucket Police were immediately contacted as was the Mayor of Pawtucket, Donald Grebien. A year and a half ago a swastika was spray painted at the bus stop very close to the synagogue.

The president of the synagogue, David Pliskin was visibly shaken and upset by the incident as was Rabbi Raphie Schochet of the Kollel whose sign was defaced.

Both the Pawtucket police and Mayor Grebien condemned the incident and said they would look at this as a hate crime.

There will be a press conference Monday morning, May 23 at 9am at Congregation Ohawe Shalom. The Mayor of Pawtucket and other dignitaries are expected to speak as well as David Pliskin, Rabbi Raphie Schochet and Jeffrey Savit, President and CEO of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island.
