Standing Up For The Most Vulnerable

Dear Friends,

Like many of you, we at the Jewish Alliance are deeply concerned about the policies related to splitting up families as they seek asylum in the United States. Although the administration signed a temporary Executive Order putting an end to this policy, it is unclear how such a change will be implemented and whether separated families will be reunited. This contradicts the Jewish values of respect and fair treatment for all human beings, and it is in opposition to the ethos of Torah and Jewish tradition.

The Jewish Alliance, in partnership with the Board of Rabbis of Greater Rhode Island and representatives from the interfaith community will hold a press conference in response to the Federal Government’s policy. Various interfaith leaders and local elected officials will convene to make statements on the issues facing these families.

Although this event is intended for the press, you are invited to join us in solidarity:

Friday, June 22, 2018 | 11:00am
Rhode Island Holocaust Memorial, South Main Street, Providence

(located on the Providence River Walk between the World War I & World War II Memorials, next to Hemenway’s)

Additionally, for those who wish to take action locally:

  • The Alliance has created a special fundraising effort to benefit HIAS (Hebrew Immigration Aid Society), a national Jewish agency with more than 130 years of expertise working to protect vulnerable refugees.
  • We are also recruiting volunteers to help support the Sanctuary work of the First Unitarian Church of Providence. For those interested in learning more about this volunteer opportunity, please contact Stephanie Hague at shague@jewishallianceri.org.

Sincerely,
Mitzi Berkelhammer, Board Chair
