This year marks the 70th anniversary of the State of Israel. Often in the United States, we only get to see Israel through the political lens. As I learned when I visited Israel two years ago, it is a country with a vibrant culture, amazing art, and business innovation that is far ahead of many countries. To celebrate this momentous anniversary, the Alliance is focusing on those aspects of Israel that are often not talked about or shown. We have a season-long community celebration planned with a variety of special events, exhibits, and opportunities to come together as a community.
While our series has already officially kicked-off, below are highlights of some not-to-be-missed upcoming events taking place at the Dwares JCC.
Humans of Tel Aviv | February 1 through March 2
Based on the viral Facebook series Human of New York, Humans of Tel Aviv features photographs and stories that highlight the rich multiculturalism that exists in Tel Aviv today. This exhibit will be on display in our gallery from Thursday, February 1 through Friday, March 2.
Golda’s Balcony | Sunday, February 11, 3:00pm
Featuring Bobbie Steinbach, this staged reading of Golda’s Balcony follows Golda Meir’s humble beginnings as a Wisconsin school teacher to her rise as one of the most influential women in Israel’s history.
PJ Library Family Concert featuring Rick Recht | Thursday, April 19, 6:00pm
Aside from being one of the most celebrated Jewish artists of our time, Recht is widely recognized as a pioneer of the Jewish rock music genre, and is the national music spokesman for PJ Library.
Michael Solomonov & Israeli Cuisine | Wednesday, May 2, 7:00pm
The James Beard Foundation Chef of the Year (2017) will share his personal story and describe what Israeli cuisine truly is. In addition to the live event with Michael Solomonov, enjoy screenings of his documentary, “The Search for Israeli Cuisine,” throughout the community leading up to his personal appearance—dates and locations to follow.
