Shabbat Shalom: From the President 12.30.16

As I sit here eating my umpteenth potato latke, I have to make a difficult confession. Simply stated, I no longer look, or much more importantly feel, like a young Robert Redford.  (Come to think of it, neither does Robert Redford, but that is beside the point). I think this latest mid-life crisis of mine occurred when my own wife and mother did not even try to refute my assertion that I had grown paunchy. As such, I need to do something about my very own first-world problem! Hence, I have my first Jewish 2017 New Year’s Resolution: I plan to get physically fit once again and attempt to lose a maximum of 18 pounds by June 30, 2017.

So how will I be motivated and receive guidance to do so?  I am very lucky that I have access to the fabulous Alliance health and wellness team, fitness classes, and aquatics facilities at the Dwares JCC, and the incredibly nurturing on-site personal trainers we have courtesy of Body Soul Personal Training. And so, too, could all of you.  Not only are our individual and family membership rates attractive and enticing, but so are our renovated health clubs, locker rooms, gymnasium, swimming pool and enhanced programmatic offerings (including the rage that is now sweeping the country, Pickleball). I encourage all of you to either return to the Dwares JCC, or join for the first time, and you will not be disappointed. Please come by for a visit or schedule a tour, and you shall be impressed. This, my friends, is our community center, and as such, should be utilized for all of our health, wellness, recreational, social, educational, communal and family activities. Our doors are open to everyone. And once our major building construction concludes later this winter, everyone will be able to access our front and back doors safely and easily. And we shall be opening a cafe on the second floor Salmanson Lobby that will be serving both food and beverages (healthy and otherwise) to satisfy all of our palettes.

So weight loss, eating sensibly, and a commitment to ongoing physical fitness, here I come. And just to make sure that I will not come up with any excuses on January 2, I plan to pledge $18 for every pound I lose to the Dwares JCC Capital Campaign.  Would anyone care to support me in this “healthy” philanthropic effort?  If so, please feel free to make a pledge, and I thank you in advance as always for your support. And besides, lo mein and jelly donuts are so 2016!

I wish everyone and your loved ones a happy, prosperous and above all, HEALTHY, 2017.

Shabbat Shalom and all my best,

Jeffrey K. Savit, President & CEO
