Shabbat Shalom: From the President 09.09.16

During the next several months, each of us has the opportunity to participate in two Super Sundays. One will take place February 5, 2017 when Tom Brady and the New England Patriots will travel to Texas to reclaim their Super Bowl title. The other will be right here in Rhode Island on September 18, 2016. Our Super Sunday marks the kickoff to the Alliance’s 2017 Annual Campaign. From 9am to 2pm, scores of loyal Jewish community volunteers, led by the indefatigable Susan and Mark Gertsacov, will be placing calls across the 401 seeking contributions to this year’s Campaign.

Super Sunday is an event worth cheering. On this day, you–our loyal donors–pledge dollars to support fellow community members locally and internationally. And the long-term impact that results is both profound and immeasurable. Allow me to give just a few examples of how Alliance Campaign dollars sustain and strengthen Jewish life in greater Rhode Island alone:

  • hot meals are delivered to home-bound seniors
  • an emergency loan feeds a struggling family
  • scholarships provide quality Jewish education for countless children
  • buses transport students to after-school programming
  • funding gives children an opportunity to create memories at summer camp
  • Birthright trips transform young adults’ relationship to Israel
  • Shabbat and holiday celebrations are accessible to those who wish to participate

Last year, we raised $3.2 million through our Annual Campaign. However, it is simply not enough to meet the growing needs of our community. We need to raise a minimum of $3.6 million this year to completely satisfy our ever increasing demands. As such, I respectfully ask each of you to answer your phones next Sunday, and participate in our community telethon. And for those of you who are able, please consider increasing your annual gift by 10% to help us meet this goal of $3.6 million. In this day and age, we need some quick touchdowns and not simply be satisfied with mere field goals.

How apropos that we commence our annual community fundraising initiative during the month ofElul. What could be more important than volunteeringdonating, and helping our own to ensure both the continuity and future of our greater Rhode Island Jewish community?

From the bottom of my heart I thank each of you, and we look forward to speaking with you next Sunday.

Shabbat Shalom,

Jeffrey K. Savit, President & CEO
