Shaliach (shah-LEE-akh) means “messenger” or “emissary” in Hebrew. The Shaliach Program creates a living bridge between Israel and the Greater Rhode Island Jewish community. The shaliach is a community resource for Israel education and advocacy, working directly with children, youth, students, and adults in the different synagogues, religious schools, youth groups, and agencies throughout the Jewish community. These programs and interactions, both formal and informal, have an incredible impact on the Greater Rhode Island Jewish community and beyond.
During the current program year, we are privileged to host Gilor Meshulam who hails from Herzliya, north of Tel Aviv. He served six and a half years in the Israel Defense Forces, achieving the rank of Captain. He has commanded a very diverse group of soldiers, including African-American Christians and Russian Christians, Bedouin and Druze Arabs, as well as Jews from the four corners of the world. In addition to typical military duties, he has taught soldiers about Israeli history and Jewish traditions and promoted a culture of physical education through jogging, cycling and more.
Gilor will serve our community with his knowledge, love of and pride for Israel, and a sincere dedication to local and worldwide Jewish communities. He will work collaboratively with Alliance staff, enriching programs and extending outreach.
