As we learn more about the unspeakable events that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia this weekend, our organization’s values and our values as a Jewish community demand that we speak out. The Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island strongly condemns the hateful acts that have taken place in Charlottesville. As Americans we honor the right to debate, protest, and counter-protest issues civilly and without the fear of violence. As Jews, we must stand against any group whose core principles are grounded in hate.
In the coming weeks the Alliance will convene our staff and lay leaders, leverage our relationship with local law enforcement, and work with the Board of Rabbis to focus on how we can begin to dismantle hate—be it through education, advocacy, public forums, or the sharing of expertise and funding. We will update you more in future messages.
As reports of terrorism, violence, and destruction around the country and world seem to be coming almost constantly, our hearts break as we learn more about yesterday’s incident. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims of these senseless attacks, to their families, and to all those affected.
We stand together against hatred and violence; we are drawn together for the purpose of peace.
